Lizette Salmon, Green and Sustainable Living Association’s Anton Therkildsen and Delwyn Clifton are concerned about the unknowns of coal seam gas mining in the Riverina. Picture: JOHN RUSSELLA FORUM will attempt to remove some of the mystery surrounding coal seam gas mining for farmers near Corowa, Tocumwal and Urana whose land is being targeted for exploration.

An expert from Monash University and a representative from mining company Energetica Resources will make a presentation at the October 25 meeting.

Delwyn Clifton, a farmer with land in the exploration licence bid area and support officer for Corowa Landcare, said little was known by many landholders about the application and any potential impacts of coal seam gas mining and exploration.

“I have no opinion on the topic, as does the committee of Corowa Landcare, but we think it’s so vital that we get sound science,” Ms Clifton said.

One of the people they will consult is environmental engineer Gavin Mudd, who said there will be a limit to the answers he can provide nervous farmers, because the mining needed more rigorous examination nationwide.

“There’s not much point in 25 or 50 years saying we got that wrong and now we have severely damaged groundwater systems that interact with the Murray,” he said.

Lizette Salmon, spokeswoman for Wodonga Albury Towards Climate Health, said the impact on the quality and quantity of groundwater was one of the things their group was particularly concerned about.

In partnership with the Green and Sustainable Living Association, her organisation will screen a documentary this month about gas drilling methods and their impacts on communities.

“Coal seam has proponents who say it’s a cleaner form of energy and key to economic prosperity but this film shows some of the devastating effects on environment and health,” she said.

The screening will be at Valhalla Wines at 6.45pm on October 17, with RSVPs to Lizette Salmon on (02) 6059 4185.

The forum will be held at 6.45pm on October 25, at Oddfellows Hall, Corowa. RSVP to Delwyn Clifton on (02) 6033 8963.
