European import Green Moon confirmed his place as the leading locally trained Melbourne Cup seed when he defied a horrid wide run to win the Turnbull Stakes.
Luck had eluded the Lloyd Williams owned runner early in the race but jockey Craig Williams sat patiently and nursed Green Moon through the race, before cruising to the leaders off the home turn.
Once unleashed by Williams, the result was never in doubt with Green Moon holding a margin over stablemate Seville and Caulfield Cup favourite December Draw at the post.
“He actually enjoyed that bit of room and movement being a European horse, it was really special that win,” said Williams after the race.
Bookmakers across the country reacted immediately to the win, with Centrebet cutting Green Moon’s Melbourne Cup price from $15 to $13, second favourite behind Brit Mount Athos, and from $11 into $8 for the Cox Plate.
