A WOMAN in her 60s has died in a car crash about 10 kilometres west of Melbourne.

Police said the woman and another man were driving west on Ballarat Road, Maidstone, when their vehicle left the road and struck a tree about 6.30pm.

The woman died at the scene.

The man, also believed to be aged in his 60s, was seriously injured and has been taken to hospital.

Constable Nicole Poynton said police did not think speed was a factor, although she said investigations were still in their early stages.

Police have set up diversions for west-bound traffic while they clear the scene.
